It seems to me that some projects might be better suited to crowdfunding than others...but I don't know how to tell what kinds of projects would work well and what kinds wouldn't work well.

I'm glad you found the article of use. Crowdfunding is still very new as a business model, so it's not easy to see patterns yet or know what are the best things to do. We can only sketch out what we see as it begins to emerge from the primal chaos.
