On Being New

I'm not very fond of being the "new kid on the block". Yet, I am not naive enough to think that I don't have to do my time as the newbie. So here I am, and I believe an introduction is in order.

I came her by way of suggestions from shadowsculptor and ysabetwordsmith of course, there is a great deal to be said for why they directed me here and thus I'll try to briefly explain my interest in this community and the things that they have brought to my attention that may just serve to revolutionize the way that I look at my creativity.

I am a writer by design. I write because I have to, it is an integral part of my being and thus I work relentlessly on creating works of fiction. My personal work however, tends to gravitate toward a fringe sort of genre. I write fiction laden with occult references, spiritual themes, and the things that most publishers cringe at, originality.

So, now I'm looking into online options so that I can make a long-time dream a reality. Ultimately, I want to gain readers and have some feedback. Even a small following would give me a boost in confidence. At least let me know I'm not just spinning my wheels. And I truly do believe that we're looking at a revolution in the publishing industry. I aim to be a part of that.

I've been on LJ in the past. I now have a blog on Wordpress, but I've returned to LJ because I really miss the community aspect of blogging. I hope to build a new list of friends with plenty of writing colleagues, interesting friends, and others that I can bounce ideas off and learn from.

I certainly hope that I've found a good place to begin here. I look forward to getting to know others, so feel free to friend me and I'll return the favor. I do try to respond to all comments though it may take a while since I work full time as well as try to write to produce a webnovel.

Rose and Bay Awards update: art and promotion

We are making excellent progress with the Rose and Bay Awards as a concept.  Plenty of people are getting excited about the idea of an award that honors excellence in crowdfunded creativity.

Activity Report
All five categories now have their nomination posts active. If you have not yet made nominations, please do so. If you have, encourages your friends and fans to drop by and participate.

Art -- 2 projects nominated.  Please help spread the word so we can get more nominations here!
Fiction -- 20 projects nominated.  The leader by a mile!
Poetry -- 2 projects nominated.  Please help spread the word so we can get more nominations here!
Other Project -- 10 projects nominated.  Good progress, more is welcome.
Patron -- 8 people nominated.  Come on, folks, everybody running a crowdfunded project should be throwing a name or three into this hat.

Promotional Materials and Art
We are continuing to create materials to support the award. Here are some things you may find helpful for promotion.

Use the landing page as a focal point when you are telling people about the Rose and Bay Awards.  This page describes the award and its rules, gives links to the individual nomination pages, lists our volunteers, notes features in progress, and explains how people can help.  Most links about the award should point here, unless you are talking about a specific nomination page.

We now have art for you to use in promoting the Rose and Bay Awards!  haikujaguar has created a logo, with which karen_wehrstein has created a batch of LJ icons, blog badges, buttons, and banners.  We also plan to offer a set of badges for the category winners later.

Rose & Bay Art Category

So maybe you folks can help me figure this out. With web comics currently in the "Other Category" I'm having trouble finding art projects to nominate. What exactly qualifies something as a crowdfunded art project? In a way that, say, a painting that's sold to someone online isn't? Can you give me some examples? Because right now, by the rules we have, someone who paints something, sells the original to a buyer through the internet and then makes a scan available is technically elgible, but I don't think that's exactly what we're aiming for.
